Brussels —
The Hungarian annual national environmental NGO gathering took place in Baja, on 18 – 20 March, 2011. HCWH and HEAL Senior Climate and Energy Advisor, Dr. Pendo Maro, was invited by Clean Air Action Group (CAAG) Hungary – the largest environmental organisation in Hungary. The aim was to meet national organisation members, share these findings with them and strengthen alliances for national support towards an EU 30% green house gas emissions reduction target by 2020 (compared to 1990 emission levels). The gathering brought together around 200 national NGOs, including presentations by senior government officials and experts.Recommendations from the three day sessions were collated and prepared into a manifesto which was handed over to the relevant government officials with specific asks.
After the NGO event, Pendo together with colleagues from CAAG, met and presented the report findings to several government officials in Budapest, including those dealing with environment, agriculture and regional development, and also Hungarian Presidency officials. The aim of the visits was to share our health co-benefits report findings with the respective decision-makers with the aim to garner support for an EU move o 30% emissions reduction target for the protection and benefit of public health. The meeting came at a time when Hungary was holding the six-moth rotating EU Council Presidency.
