| Global: The Importance of Climate Change to Health: Where the UN Negotiations Sit |
| by The Lancet |
A survey conducted at the sixteenth negotiation session of the Conference of the Parties of the UNFCCC (COP16) demonstrated that COP delegates acknowledge that human health should be an important factor in the UNFCCC negotiations yet delegates also recognised that health is currently not important to the process. It also suggests that more health expertise needs to be present at the negotiations, and government delegations require more negotiators who have a health background. Most importantly, health professionals need to improve the communication of the health effects of climate change and the health and economic benefits of emission reductions to the general public and to policy makers. more |

As Botswana studies its growing vulnerability to climate change, health risks associated with a changing climate have come to the forefront. Higher temperatures and less frequent and predictable rain have hurt crops and nutrition, which is essential for strengthening the immune system against HIV/AIDS and tuberculosis. Meanwhile, higher carbon dioxide levels are enabling the rapid spread of primary malaria agents malaria to mostly women and girls. more |

The gender dimension of climate change is gaining a greater profile in the global debate. Yet the double jeopardy brought by gender and age remains largely ignored. According to the Report Weathering the Storm: Adolescent Girls and Climate Change climate change disproportionately affects girls, particularly adolescent girls. Women and girls constitute 70% of the global poor and the combination of poverty and prescribed gender roles means that they are increasingly being affected by climate risks. more |
