| The Health Sector on the Front Lines |
In the age of climate change, the health sector finds itself on the front lines, confronting and adapting to a changing landscape and shifting burden of disease. By working to reduce carbon pollution in the atmosphere, while developing forward looking adaptation strategies, we can protect human health, saving lives and money. Indeed, the health sector can play a leadership role in developing and modeling climate solutions for the rest of society. |

The UK's The UK's National Health System, Sustainable Development Unit (NHS SDU) and its partners have published updated information around adaptation in their latest guidance Adaptation to Climate Change for Health and Social Care organisations. According to the document "Building preparedness and resilience now to the predicted health impacts of climate change will save costs in the short and long term, protect lives and deliver health outcomes." This Adaptation Guidance also states that adaptation should be an integral component of Sustainable Development Management Plans (SDMPs) and describes what climate change adaptation is and why it is a priority for the NHS. more |

Governments, businesses, and citizens in South Asia need access to good information to make decisions in a changing climate. However, the uncertainty of climate change's impacts, complexity associated with climate vulnerability, and the lengthy time-frame along which global warming will unfold make the "adaptation information agenda" unclear. In this regard, the World Resource Institute published a working paper with preliminary research, analysis, findings, and recommendations. It also aims to identify barriers to information use for climate adaptation in South Asia and proposes four areas of further inquiry. more |

For decades, scientists have known that the effects of global climate change could have a devastating impact across the globe, but Harvard researchers say there is now evidence that it may also have a dramatic impact on public health. In the July 27 issue of Science, a team of researchers led by James G. Anderson, the Philip S. Weld Professor of Atmospheric Chemistry, warns that a newly discovered connection between climate change and depletion of the ozone layer could allow more damaging ultraviolet (UV) radiation to reach the Earth's surface, leading to increased incidence of skin cancer. more |

Facing the severe threat of climate change, California policymakers and researchers announced new data to reduce and adapt to climate change. According to new reports released by the California Natural Resources Agency and the California Energy Commission, state and local leaders now have a wealth of detailed information about adapting to climate change. The new data will help state and local communities to protect public health, grow the State's economy, ensure energy reliability, and safeguard the environment. Conducted by 26 research teams from numerous academic institutions, the reports comprise the State's third climate change assessment released since 2006. here |
