Health Care Without Harm SE-Asia – HCWH-SEA welcomes the appointment of Dr. Enrique T. Ona as head of the Department of Health and hopes that the new Secretary will do more than his predecessor. According to Merci Ferrer, hopes where very high when outgoing Secretary Esperanza Cabral was appointed since he expressed full support to the phase-out of mercury-containing devices in health care during the 2006 Southeast Asia Mercury in Health Care Conference held in Manila. She promised the same support when she became Health Secretary. more

The Hindu – According to Jairam Ramesh, Union Minister of State for Environment and Forests, Twenty-five years on, any government would be ashamed that so little has been done to resolve the issue of Bhopal gas tragedy. In this regard, representatives of seven survivors' organisations of the tragedy talked with Mr. Ramesh and discussed the economic and medical rehabilitation of the victims who, they said, were still drinking contaminated water. more

Trinidad & Tobago: Dengue Cases Rising
Newsday – The Health Ministry said with the rainy season, the number of dengue cases being reported at hospitals and to the ministry has been increasing quite dramatically. The rate of the disease has been peaking in five-year cycles but Chief Medical Officer Cumberbatch said it has been noticed locally and worldwide that the cycle is getting shorter due to climate change and increased temperatures.  more

Chile: Clinic Opens Largest Solar Panel for Water Heating
ChileHospitalaria – Dávila Clinic in conjunction with project Chilectra, developed the country’s largest water heater based on solar energy. The project included the installation of 264 solar thermal collectors, which covered an area of 740 square meters, which heats more than 70 thousand litters of water without generating greenhouse gas emissions. more (in spanish)
