China: Companies Use Medical Waste to Make Seals for Restaurant Utensils
Global Times – Those airtight wrappers used to seal restaurant utensils to keep them safe and clean could be making people sick, according to a recent report, which said the wraps are made from recycled medical waste containers. Although bowls and plates are washed, the wraps could be carrying countless germs if not properly treated, experts said. more

US: Medical Waste Found Dumped In Area Neighborhood
WXPI.com –The Health Department was called to a Pittsburgh neighborhood after neighbors said they found medical waste on a street. Public Works crews said they picked up 10 bags of medical related waste from Davita Dialysis Center. more

Canada: Carcinogenic Cadmium Packed Jewelry Still Being Sold
Montreal Gazette – Children's jewelry items known to be packed with cadmium, including a piece made almost exclusively of the toxic metal, remain on store shelves and in homes, Health Canada confirmed. Internal government test results show 28 of 91 samples tested since last fall contained cadmium levels greater than Health Canada's threshold of 107 mg/kg or 0.01% cadmium.  more

Tasmania Government PR – The Public and Environmental Health Service instigated a public health investigation following the detection of heavy metals in the St Pauls River and has developed an environmental monitoring program in collaboration with the Environment Protection Agency, Mineral Resources Tasmania and the Northern Midlands Council. more

Indonesia: Climate Change Affects Health in Indonesia
The Jakarta Post – Climate change is responsible for 2.4% of all cases of diarrhea worldwide and for 2% of all cases of malaria, according to the WHO. Climate change automatically has an impact on the spread of disease in Indonesia. Scientist Amin Subandrio estimated that 35 new infectious diseases have appeared due to climate change. He also said that climate change has made humans more vulnerable to disease and also increased the incidence of airborne and waterborne disease.  more

Vietnam: Vietnam Listed Among Nations Hardest Hit by Climate Change
Times of India – Vietnam is listed among 16 nations in Asia which will suffer the most serious consequences of climate change in the next 30 years. This is the first time researchers have considered climate change on a large scale looking at such factors as population, agriculture, health systems, infrastructure, as well as economic and social issues.  more
