Philippines: Mercury-free Health Care Forum Set for Mindanao Media Practitioners
HCWH SEAsia – Health Care Without Harm Southeast Asia is inviting media practitioners in Mindanao to a Mercury-Free Health Care Forum on October 29, 2010 at General Santos City. Sonia G. Astudillo, focal person HCWH-SEA said their office along with hospitals and other health care facilities, will be discussing the accuracy of mercury alternatives, as well as the guidelines for safe storage of phased-out mercury devices.  more

New Delhi: Medical Waste Must be Managed Effectively
Sify News – Lieutenant Governor Tejendra Khanna stressed the importance of effective management of medical waste to minimise health risk to healthcare workers. Khanna, in his inaugural address at the annual conference of the Indian Society of Hospital Waste Management said the efforts would also lead to enhancing safety of the workers. more

South Africa: Green Scorpions to Inspect Medical Waste Site
News24 – One of the sites where tons of illegally dumped medical waste was found in the Free State would be inspected by the Green Scorpions for compliance with a clean up and rehabilitation order, the department of environmental affairs said.  more

China & US: Study Links BPA to Reproductive Problems
PRW.com – An American study of more than 200 Chinese factory workers has found a link between plastic feedstock bisphenol A (BPA) in urine and potential reproduction problems such as decreased sperm vitality and count. more

Europe: ECHA Calls for Comments on Reports Proposing Restrictions on Mercury and Phenylmercury
European Chemical Agency – ECHA has prepared a report, on the request of the Commission, suggesting restrictions on several mercury containing measuring devices. A report from Norway is suggesting a ban on five phenylmercury substances. ECHA starts today the six-month public consultation period on these proposals. ECHA, however, encourages interested parties to send in their comments by 24 December 2010. more

Asia: Dengue Spreads Across as a Result of Higher Temperatures
Top News – According to reports, the number of dengue cases (a mosquito-borne disease) is said to be spreading all across Asia. The higher temperature as a result of the climate change is being seen as a major reason for the outbreak and at present has put 70% of the population at risk.  more
