India: Hospital Faces Actions for Dumping Medical Waste in Open Area
The Times of India – The Uttar Pradesh Pollution Control Board (UPPCB) will file a case against the chief medical superintendent of Lala Lajpat Rai (LLR) Hospital for violating the bio-medical waste management (BWM) rules. Despite several reminders by the board, the biomedical waste of the hospital was dumped and burned in an open area within the premises of the hospital.  more

Philippines: Group Wants Whitening Products Banned
Philstar – The EcoWaste Coalition asked the Food and Drugs Administration (FDA) to be strict on skin whitening products that are in the market as many of them may not be registered with the agency. EcoWaste noted the FDA should be vigilant since these products may contain toxic chemicals like mercury that could damage the liver and the nervous system, among others. more

Europe: Portable Battery Makers Tout Mercury Success
ENDS Europe – Members of the European Portable Battery Association (EPBA) will meet their mercury reduction goal by July. This means only 5% of the button batteries they sell will contain the heavy metal, according to its first sustainability report. more

US: Food Packaging Significant Source of BPA Exposure, New Study Finds
Commondreams – A peer-reviewed study published in Environmental Health Perspectives suggests that food packaging is a substantial source of exposure to the endocrine-disrupting chemical bisphenol A (BPA), which laboratory studies have linked to breast cancer, infertility, early puberty, and other serious health problems. more

India: Push to Study Black Carbon's on the Environment and Health
The Times of India Newspaper – The New Delhi government launched a black carbon research initiative to study the phenomenon of black carbon, its sources and impact on health and environment. Pakistan: E-waste Threatens Region's Environment
The News – E-waste is polluting the environment which is incredibly damaging the nature and human health. China, Pakistan and India are the mega markets where E-waste is buried at a large. Atal Baqai, UN’s Regional Coordinator Environment Programme, also observed that E-waste is a major reason behind conversion of highly fertile agricultural land to barren at large scale. more
