The Times of India – A Civil Hospital in Gurgaon has been issued a notice by the Haryana State Pollution Control Board over the installation of an effluent treatment plant and a notice for the alleged violation of pollution norms in the segregation of hazardous bio-medical waste.  more

Europe: HCWH Europe Comments on the ECHA Annex Restriction Report on Mercury
HCWH – Health Care Without Harm Europe is pleased to have the opportunity to comment on the Annex XV restriction report by the European Chemical Agency (ECHA). Mercury is a metal, which is toxic for humans and wildlife. Recent research indicates that, for some parts of the population, there is no such thing as a safe exposure level for mercury. more

US: BPA Linked to Atypical Childhood Social Behaviors
Environment and health news – Prenatal exposure to endocrine disruptors has the potential to impact early brain development. A recent study finds that children with higher fetal exposure to both phthalates and bisphenol A have impaired social functioning. The social behavior – including difficult interpersonal and social awareness skills – reported by the moms are similar to those associated with ADHD and autism. The results add to a growing list of studies on the topic and are published in the journal NeuroToxicology. more

Philippines: Rising Dengue Cases as a Result of Climate Change
The Journal Online – Senator Loren Legarda, worried over the reported rise in dengue cases as a result of climate change, urged the Department of Health to improve its public health services and ensure early prevention and control of diseases. Legarda, chairperson of the Senate Committee on Climate Change, said that according to the study Climate Vulnerability Monitor 2010, it is not disasters but climate change related-diseases that cause the most number of deaths.  more
