Philippines: HCWH and Other Environmental Groups Detect Toxic Vapors

An investigation conducted by Health Care Without Harm SE-Asia, Ban Toxics, Global Alliance for Incinerator Alternatives, and the EcoWaste Coalition yielded disturbing levels of mercury vapor in lamp waste recycling stations. The groups pointed out that mercury is highly toxic especially to developing nervous systems and that exposure to high levels of mercury could cause permanent brain damage, central nervous system disorders, memory loss, heart disease, kidney failure, liver damage, vision loss, sensation loss, and tremors. more |

Brussels: HCWH attends Public Hearing on Endocrine Disrupters and Launch of SIN 2.0
HCWH – On 3rd of May Anja Leetz, executive director of HCWH Europe will attend a "Public Hearing on Endocrine-Disrupting Chemicals - from Ambition to Action" in Brussels. Philippines: Dengue Cases Rise As a Result of Climate Change
The Journal – Senator Loren Legarda, chairperson of the Senate Committee on Climate Change and worried over the reported rise in dengue cases as a result of climate change, urged the Department of Health to improve its public health services and ensure early prevention and control of diseases. According to Legarda and quoting the Climate Vulnerability Monitor 2010, it is not disasters but climate change related-diseases that cause the most number of deaths. more

Spain: Hospitals Save Millions on Solar Power
Hospitalaria – Hospisol, a project of the Regional Energy Authority of Castilla and León (EREN), dependent of the Ministry of Economy and Employment aims to install solar hot water panels and provide renewable energy in all 23 public hospitals (7,000 beds) in the region. This will represent savings equal to 560 tonnes of oil per year. The project, begun in 2004 has reached 65% of its goal. more (in spanish)
