Egypt: Medical Waste in Poses a Deadly Threat
The Egyptian Gazette – Villagers living close to areas where hospital waste is dumped have set up vigilante groups to prevent health officials dumping any more hospital garbage. They have also torched the medical waste dumped near their homes after being emboldened by the Ministry of Environment, which says that these dumps are a serious environmental threat. more

China: China bans bisphenol A in baby bottles
Food Production Daily
– China has become the latest country to ban the use of bisphenol A (BPA) in baby bottles. The Ministry of Health, in conjunction with five other government bodies, issued notices confirming that inclusion of BPA in the manufacture of infant bottles would be outlawed as from 1 June. more

US: Google Kicking PVC Plastic to the Curb
Sustainable Industries – Google is no longer going to be using PVC thanks to the work of the Healthy Building Network and the Living Building Challenge's red list of materials and chemicals. Google's decision was also partially driven by EPA's new Chemicals of Concern list, which has targeted phthalates for regulation. Over 90% of all phthalates are used to soften PVC products like flooring in schools and hospitals. Google has joined a growing list of companies that have targeted PVC for phase-out. more

Europe: HCWH Supported Committee Vote For a 30% EU Reduction Target in GHG Emissions by 2020
HCWH – Health Care Without Harm Europe and Health and Environment Alliance, both leading health and environment groups working at the European level, voiced their strong approval following the ENVI Committee vote in support for a 30% EU reduction target in greenhouse gas emissions by 2020. According to Dr. Pendo Maro, Senior Policy Advisor, HCWH/HEAL Europe, "This vote paves the way for strong climate policies in the EU that will protect public health." more

Sweden: Seminar on Climate Change and Human Health
Climate and Health Net – The Seminar that will take place on June 10th, in Betula, Norrlands University hospital, Umeå, Sweden, will focus on climate change and human health. During the seminar world-leading scientists will present, analyze and discuss direct and indirect effects on human health arising from the changing climate but also on ways of adapting to these effects. more |
