Karachi: Hospital Waste Disposal, Lawyer Asks Court to Review Case
Tribune – The Sindh High Court has been asked to review its order in a public interest petition regarding the dangerous disposal of hospital waste in Karachi by both private and public sector hospitals. The review petition was filed by Qazi Athar Ali Advocate, a lawyer and head of a NGO battling and HCWH member to improve the environment of the city. more

Punjab: Hospitals Noticed for Improper Disposal of Biomedical Waste
Indian Express –
The Punjab Pollution Control Board (PPCB) has served notices to 54 public and private hospitals of the city for improper disposal of biomedical waste. These hospitals came under the scanner of the PPCB which had conducted surprise raids at about 100 medical establishments which included government run and private hospitals. more

Denpasar: Hospitals Told to Phase Out Mercury Use

– Hospitals have been advised to apply proper procedures in handling mercury waste and gradually replace health equipment containing mercury. The call was made in a workshop on mercury-free health care amid concerns over a lack of awareness on the urgency to take action in phasing out the use of the dangerous substance, and to apply sustainable medical waste management, where hospitals should be the leading sector. more

Study Links Chemical Phthalates in Plastics to Thyroid Irregularities
Thyrod About.com – A new study published in the journal Environmental Health Perspectives, has established a connection between several common phthalates and measurements of thyroid hormones. The study, which was conducted by researchers at the University of Michigan, is the first large-scale study evaluating the connection of phthalates and BPA in relation to thyroid function in people. more

Korea: Scientists Link Cholera Outbreaks and Climate Change
IVI.org – A new study into the linkages between rain, temperature and cholera shows scientists may be able to predict epidemics in time to save people from the life-threatening disease. After analysing several years of disease and weather data from cholera-endemic areas of Zanzibar, Tanzania, scientists from the International Vaccine Institute in Korea, found that if a more than one degree Cº increase in the average monthly minimum temperature and a 200mm increase in monthly rainfall were recorded in a month, a cholera outbreak was imminent in the following month. more

Scotland: Environment Protection Agency Takes Action Over Waste Electronic and Electrical Equipment
Rapid Online – The Scottish Environment Protection Agency (SEPA) has announced the signing of an agreement with Crimestoppers to target companies that illegally carry out waste operations in the country. SEPA is looking to clamp down on those firms that flout waste electronic and electrical equipment rules and cause environmental harm. more
