Tanzania: Health Worker Safety Initiative Creates a Lifesaving Culture of Change
Trust.org – Inobena Tosiri, assistant nurse-in-charge of the oncology ward at Bugando Medical Centre in Tanzania, has learned a great deal about preventing the spread of infection and disease and has shared this lifesaving knowledge with coworkers. As Nurse Tosiri's knowledge of safe practices grew, so did her commitment to making Bugando Medical Centre a safer place for both patients and staff. Since 2009, she has led health worker safety trainings on hand washing, waste disposal, and environmental decontamination. more

Indore: Hospitals Ignore Norms on Biomedical Waste Disposal

Nearly 8 to 10 per cent government hospitals in Indore division have yet to adopt the rules and regulations to dispose of biomedical waste. Going by the Madhya Pradesh Pollution Control Board (MPPCB) data, while hospitals in cities follow the MPPCB norms to dispose of waste, the scene is somewhat different in hospitals at block level. more

Global: HCWH Position on Mercury Treaty Draft Text
HCWH – With the mercury treaty going into its third round of negotiations next month and regional meetings taking place right now, we are moving closer to a global phase-out of mercury-based medical devices.
Governments are currently considering a draft text with four options for dealing with mercury-added products, the category under which thermometers and blood pressure devices fall. more

Brazil: Government-Organized Panel on Mercury in Health Care
ANVISA –
The National Agency of Sanitary Vigilance (ANVISA), which is charged with regulating medical devices organized a a day long symposium to address the health impacts of mercury and substitution of mercury in the health sector. The purpose of the meeting was to have academics, industries, health services and the government discuss the policies adopted by other countries to restrict the use of mercury and its replacement, as well as assess the costs and other aspects to carry out its replacement in Brazil. more

UK: Climate Change Will Increase Heart Deaths
BBC – More people will die of heart problems as global warming continues, experts are warning. Climate extremes of hot and cold will become more common and this will put strain on people's hearts, doctors say. A study in the British Medical Journal found that each 1C temperature drop on a single day in the UK is linked to 200 extra heart attacks. more

US: HCWH Launches Clean Air Promise Campaign
HCWH – Health Care Without Harm has announced a new initiative to help support the Clean Air Act. Called the "Clean Air Promise", the campaign will target the health care community, legislators and policy makers, community and business leaders, and individuals, asking them to make a Promise to protect America's children and families from air pollution. The new campaign is part of a wider initiative by HCWH to defend the Clean Air Act, which has engaged nurses and other health care professionals to help draw attention to the health consequences of air pollution. more
