Global: New Training Video on Mercury Waste in Hospitals
HCWH – HCWH has released a video meant to be part of training program for hospitals around the world aiming to eliminate mercury and safely manage and store mercury waste while governments search for a more permanent solution. The video is based on the UNDP-GEF Global Healthcare Waste Project mercury waste management guidelines and was produced with support from UNEP and the government of Norway.  Video in English / Video in Spanish

Philippines: Burn Not, Government Warned
HCWH – Amidst on-going push from different government sectors to amend the Philippine Clean Air Act, Health Care Without Harm-Southeast released a 3-part Public Service Announcement on incineration. "Burn Not" cautions the national government to stop burning and the local governments to shun from legitimizing waste-to-energy or "incinerators-in-disguise" contracts recently signed by different Local Governmetn Uints, particularly in Mindanao.  more

Chile: III International Seminar of Mercury-Free Hospitals
HCWH – With the participation of HCWH, the Third International Seminar on Mercury-Free Hospitals was sucesfully held in Santiago, Chile. 84 people attended the event, including members of the Ministry of Health and the Institute of Occupational Health.  more (in Spanish)

US: APHA Calls For a Phase Out of Toxic Vinyl Plastic in Schools, Daycare Centers and Hospitals
HCWH – The American Public Health Association (APHA) passed a major policy that supports phasing out toxic PVC plastic in schools, daycare centers, hospitals, public housing and other facilities with vulnerable populations. You can read the APHA's policy statement here. This resolution by one of the largest association of health professionals in the United States is an important new voice calling for government agencies to take action to address the risks posed by PVC, and endocrine disrupting chemicals like phthalates and dioxin released by vinyl.  more

US: Climate Experts: Expect More Weather Disasters
CBS News – A new report produced by a panel of climate scientists paints a wild future for a world already weary of weather catastrophes costing billions of dollars. The report says costs will rise and perhaps some locations will become "increasingly marginal as places to live." The report from the Nobel Prize-winning Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change will be issued in a few weeks, after a meeting in Uganda. It says there is at least a 2-in-3 probability that climate extremes have already worsened because of man-made greenhouse gases.  more

Mexico: Children's Hospital of Chihuahua to Implement a Solar Energy Pilot Project
Business Wire – The American Development Bank (NADB) and the Border Environment Cooperation Commission (BECC) signed a letter of agreement with the Chihuahua State Government to support the implementation of a solar energy pilot project in the capital of Chihuahua. The project, involving the construction of a solar plant will supply the new Children's Hospital of Chihuahua.  more
