HCWH is a Grand Challenges Explorations winner, an initiative funded by the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation. HCWH will be working with Health Care Foundation Nepal (HECAF), and WHO, basing the investigation at Nepal's Bir Hospital and the National Kidney Center. Researchers will gather and test different types of syringes used in immunization programs to determine their recycling value, and to identify the most economical way of disinfecting them using different autoclave (steam sterilization) methods.

A new report, produced by Health Care Without Harm's Research Collaborative and published by The Commonwealth Fund with support from the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, found that savings achieved through sustainability interventions could exceed $5.4 billion over five years and $15 billion over 10 years nationally. GGHH Founding Member, México Hospital from Costa Rica, launched an Energy Savings Campaign aimed at its members, staff and patients to raise awareness about the importance of and need for saving on electricity, water and paper. At the same time, in an effort to reduce their environmental footprint, hospitals in Argentina and Brazil are carrying out projects to green their facilities. |
