Health Groups Call on Climate Negotiators to Take Action

DOHA Declaration
Building upon last year's successful climate and health summit, Health Care Without Harm, together with health organizations from around the world - including World Medical Association, the International Council of Nurses, International Federation of Medical Students, Climate and Health Alliance and others - released a statement aimed at climate negotiators who met last week in Doha, Qatar.

The Declaration details why health experts are extremely concerned about the slow progress at the international climate negotiations, and highlights how protecting the climate can protect public health.  more

HCWH Receives Gates Grand Challenge Grant

HCWH is a Grand Challenges Explorations winner, an initiative funded by the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation. HCWH will be working with Health Care Foundation Nepal (HECAF), and WHO, basing the investigation at Nepal's Bir Hospital and the National Kidney Center. Researchers will gather and test different types of syringes used in immunization programs to determine their recycling value, and to identify the most economical way of disinfecting them using different autoclave (steam sterilization) methods. more

Environmentally Sustainable Health Care Can Save Billions

A new report, produced by Health Care Without Harm's Research Collaborative and published by The Commonwealth Fund with support from the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, found that savings achieved through sustainability interventions could exceed $5.4 billion over five years and $15 billion over 10 years nationally. "Can Sustainable Hospitals Help Bend the Health Care Cost Curve?" is available online. more

Global Green and Healthy Hospitals Founding Members Take Action

GGHH Founding Member, México Hospital from Costa Rica, launched an Energy Savings Campaign aimed at its members, staff and patients to raise awareness about the importance of and need for saving on electricity, water and paper. At the same time, in an effort to reduce their environmental footprint, hospitals in Argentina and Brazil are carrying out projects to green their facilities.

HCWH Joins Proposal to Reduce Water Pollution Risks

HCWH Europe, and other environmental NGOs such as Greenpeace, PAN Germany, WWF, have joined together to support the inclusion of three pharmaceuticals on the "priority substances list" in the field of water policy meaning that they should be monitored and concentration limits should be set for them.  more
