India | Lucknow Hospital Recognized for Cutting-Edge Medical Waste Work

The King George's Medical University (KGMU) received a Special Recognition Award from UNDP/GEF Global Healthcare Waste Management Project, HCWH and the World Health Organization for transforming the hospital over two and a half years from an institution without any effective waste management program into a regional model institution for sound bio-medical waste management practices. more | Watch video of KGMU's experience


South Africa | Health and Energy Policy Roundtable

HCWH Partner Organization, groundWork, will participate of a Health and Energy Policy Roundtable that will take place April 24th. The roundtable will bring together health professionals, researchers, and academics with energy policy experts to identify the health implications of current energy policy and systems in the Western Cape and South Africa, develop a position for a healthy energy policy and a collaborative strategy for mobilizing the health sector on energy and health impacts. more


Argentina | City of Rosario, HCWH Agree to Replace Chemicals in Hospitals

HCWH and Global Green and Healthy Hospitals Founding Member, Rosario's Department of Public Health (covering 52 health centers and 5 hospitals) signed an agreement to promote the replacement of hazardous chemicals used in hospitals for safer alternatives. The agreement, signed in the auditorium of the Dr. Roque Sãenz Peña Hospital (also Global Green and Healthy Hospital's founding member), is a component of an HCWH project financed by UNEP's Strategic Approach to International Chemicals Management—SAICM to model sound chemicals management in the healthcare sector. more (in Spanish).

Toward Toxic-Free Health Care in Europe

On 21 March 2013, HCWH Europe organized a parliamentary lunch workshop to discuss the needs of moving towards a non-toxic European health care system and demand for alternatives to harmful chemicals in medical devices. The event also contributed to the current debate in the European Parliament on the new European Commission's proposal on the Medical Device Regulation. more

US | HCWH Supports Safe Chemicals Act of 2013

Calling it a major step forward for public health, HCWH applauded the Safe Chemicals Act of 2013. The legislation would provide long overdue fixes to the nation's broken chemical policies, limit the use of unsafe chemicals linked to a wide range of diseases and health conditions and protect Americans from chemicals before they are linked to costly and often preventable diseases and conditions. more


Coal Combustion Poses Serious Risks to Human Health, Review Finds

In conjunction with HCWH, the Health Care Research Collaborative based at University of Illinois at Chicago, released a new scientific review documenting the evidence of the health impacts from coal use in energy generation. Lead author Dr. Susan Buchanan, said the review findings demonstrated it was vital that energy policy decisions took into account the harm caused to human health from fossil fuels and from coal in particular. more
