Holding a Mercury Thermometer Exchange

There is enough mercury in one fever thermometer to contaminate a 20 acre lake. Currently, forty states have fish consumption advisories because of widespread mercury contamination. In an effort to safeguard community and environmental health, Health Care Without Harm supports local efforts to replace mercury fever thermometers with their safer digital counterparts. Communities all over the country are holding mercury fever thermometer exchanges in an attempt to eliminate this dangerous potential source of pollution from their local environment.

To learn about how to hold a thermometer roundup in your area, see Health Care Without Harm's How to Plan and Hold a Mercury Fever Thermometer Exchange (pdf).

To view an informational booklet designed for parents, healthcare providers or educators that teaches how to eliminate mercury from your home and how to clean up and dispose of mercury spills properly, see Health Care Without Harm s Mercury Thermometers and Your Family s Health.
